Durham Road User Charge Zone (peninsula)
Durham City peninsula - the charge point is at the entry to the peninsula on Silver Street (ANPR at the junction of Silver Street and Claypath), covering access to Durham Cathedral, the Market Place and nearby shops.
Who pays
All vehicles entering or leaving the zone during charging hours, regardless of emissions, unless exempt.
When it applies
10am to 2am, Monday to Sunday; not charged on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day.

- Must register: NHS vehicles exempt from road tax; disabled and disabled-passenger tax class vehicles; bullion vehicles; recovery vehicles (recovery tax class); taxis, hackney carriages and private hire vehicles; local bus services; non-liveried emergency vehicles on duty; liveried breakdown vehicles on duty; liveried utility vehicles working on roads
- Blue Badge holders can register up to two vehicles
How to pay
Online via a 'permit account' (Durham City Congestion Charge permit category); PayByPhone location code 804250 (on the day only); in person at The Parking Shop, Forster House, Framwellgate Moor (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm); or phone 0191 384 6633 (Mon-Fri 9am-4pm).
Payment deadline
In advance (up to 2 weeks before) or within 24 hours of entering the zone. Note: the online account terms say payment must be made by midnight on the day the road was used, and PayByPhone only works on the day. No retrospective payment after the deadline - wait for the PCN.
If you don't pay
PCN £50 for non-payment (registered keeper). Durham's general parking-fine pages say PCNs are reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days and increase by 50% with a charge certificate, but this is not stated on the road user charge page itself.
Good to know
Congestion-style charge, not emissions-based. The charge is now £5 (older third-party sources say £2). Deadline wording differs between the council page (within 24 hours) and the online account T&Cs (by midnight on the day) - pay on the day to be safe. No vehicle checker (not emissions-based).
