Who pays
Drivers of cars, vans, buses and HGVs, in each direction (each direction counts as one passage). Motorbikes are free.
When it applies
Always. A toll is due each time you travel through, in either direction.

Discounts and exemptions
- Pre-Paid Account: 10% off every passage
- Exemption account (free travel) for Blue Badge holders and vehicles with nil road tax through Motability or disability; renew every year
- Exemption accounts for eligible charities, businesses and service providers (e.g. fire, ambulance, police, bus)
How to pay
Free-flow: no booths and no cash at the tunnel. Pay online (tt2.co.uk), with the app, on the automated phone line 0191 574 0030, or in cash at PayPoint shops. Guest payment covers up to 10 passages valid for 12 months. American Express not accepted.
Payment deadline
By midnight the day after you travel through the tunnel
If you don't pay
Unpaid Toll Charge Notice (UTCN) issued automatically: £30 plus the toll, rising to £60 plus toll at day 15 and £100 plus toll at day 30; from about day 37–44 a collection agency can add up to £79. Payments made after the deadline are applied to future passages, not the missed one.
Good to know
Current tolls took effect on 1 May 2026 (River Tyne (Tunnels) (Revision of Tolls) Order 2026), up from £2.50 and £5.00. All tolls are exempt from VAT.
